10 Things you Should Have in the Car Boot

Heading off on a road trip? Here's a few things you should pack in a duffel bag and always have in the trunk of your car

  1. Jumper Leads - a common sense item that could also help a stranger in distress.
  2. Water - in a 4 litre glass bottle or tin. Don't leave water in your car in plastic and make sure you keep it fresh.
  3. Flashlight - problems on the road don't always happen in the bright light of day.
  4. Reflector - most cars come with these, but if not, and you're over a hill or around a bend you want to give on-coming traffic fair warning.
  5. Tyre inflater (pump), preferably that plugs into your cigarette lighter. If you have an older car, most flat tyres are the result of a nail or screw in the street.  A pump can get you to a petrol station or closest town.
  6. First-aid kit - from a simple injury at a soccer game to worse, it's always good to have some first-aid supplies on hand.
  7. Small tool-kit or multi-tool - car keys make lousy screwdrivers.  It's nice to have the real thing on hand.
  8. Blanket - an unplanned night in the car is no fun.  Especially if it's cold outside.
  9. Tow rope - sure I can pull you out.  Got a rope?
  10. Duct tape - every man's best friend.   Fixes everything! And makes for a good bandage in case you forgot that first-aid kit.

Science Notes

While most people are members of automobile clubs, if you are headed off the beaten track or up into the mountains at night, it's important to be prepared - especially if you are out of mobile phone range.

Always make sure someone knows where you have left from in the morning and where you expect to be at night.

Related Tip

Only keep items in the car that you actually need.

There is no need to store your entire wardrobe or something you might need one day, in your car. (Except re-usable shopping bags of course!)
