3 Easy Steps to Help Kids Become Eco Warriors

As a parent, some of the biggest joys when it comes to raising our children is watching them evolve, explore their curiosity and teaching them a world of new skills and values. So why not take the time to teach our kids about protecting their environment and make positive choices through eating, drinking, clothing and lifestyle behaviours?

A child’s mind is beautifully raw, honest, transparent, and curious. Let’s play to their fascinations and introduce our kids to an eco-lifestyle that will permeate through all facets of life.

Imagine the impact that could transpire from a tribe of tiny ‘‘eco warriors’. Here are my favourite tips to help kids become eco warriors.

1. Early Education

Educating young children to make healthier life decisions with practical lessons about the impact that their decisions make on the environment, both positive and negative creates healthy lifelong learning. And when children are young the opportunities are boundless.

A great way to teach kids about their environmental impact is to show them the life cycle of a cheap  plastic toy. Show them the key resources and materials used to manufacture, transport, and dispose of plastic – which of course is very difficult to do – making it not so cheap for the planet. Plastic toys are great examples of impact decisioning.

Young people quickly get a sense of how wrong it is to pollute and once this understanding is deep rooted, it makes going shopping much easier, as you can discuss consequences when they want to buy a new plastic toy.  Show them alternatives to plastic and go through the same process of exploration before agreeing to buy anything.

2. Lead by Example

The first five years of a child’s life are critical for development. The experiences children have in these pivotal years help shape the adults they’ll become and the decisions they make along the way. We, as parents, have a big part to play in our child’s early development.

If you create habits early and lead by example to reduce waste, go green, choose organic, reuse and recycle, you are guiding and practically instilling behaviours for life.

3. Make Simple Adjustments

Make small adjustments in your life to reduce waste everywhere possible, especially plastic or toxic consumables. There are many readily available alternatives that are made with biodegradable plant materials, natural ingredients and with minimal packaging.

As you make changes, make sure you include your children in the discussions as some things include them directly and others don’t always.

Simple things such as reducing plastic food packaging, seeking alternatives to chemical cleaning products, first aid kits and cosmetics along with choosing organic produce.

Once you have adjusted, the changes quickly become second nature and influence your children to do the same – making better eco choices through their life.
