5 Easy Photography Tips

5 Easy Photography Tips

Hi there. I'm photographer, Jono Searle. It is so easy to take a great photo and here are my 5 top tips for getting great shots every time.

Number 1 Photography Essential: Light

Great photography has a lot to do with great light. It concentrates the viewer’s eye to the story you are trying to tell. Good light has to be found. You will never get a nice portrait of someone for instance in the middle on the day in full sun. Use your eye and look for light that grabs you. Images taken early morning or late in the afternoon always help make images look more dramatic and eye catching.

Good light, you are half way there as you can see in this picture.

Number 2 Photography Essential: Focal point

Every good photo has to have a focal point that the eye is drawn to. This can be someone’s eyes in the middle of the frame, mixed with a blurred clean background to make the focal point stand out. This combined with great light makes for a great photo.

My model bat with soft light against the sky and the focal point is her eyes and face. The blurred background brings out the focal point even more.

Number 3 Photography Essential:  A reasonable camera

Yes, we all have an Iphone now that can take a mighty fine pic these days, but nothing beats a decent DSLR camera.  You can get kits at a reasonable price these days, with lenses that let the photographers eye see exactly what they are going to get. The great thing is that once you see that great light we are after you can be sure a DSLR will produce what your eye sees.

If you have a good camera, the previous two essentials, Light and Focal Point are going to be a lot easier to achieve.

Number 4 Photography Essential: Good subject matter

Good subject matter is very subjective, but you simply need to have something you love to photograph. A subject matter that is interesting to you. Then you simply need to find the essence of that subject and try and capture it in a natural way, using the three previous essentials. Photograph what you are drawn to and the rest will follow.

Capture the subjects you think are interesting, get down on its level if you have to and make it the focal point of your image.

Number 5 Photography Rule: Take lots of photos

The best thing about digital photography is that you can take as many photos as you like - and you should!  We now have digital cameras that allow you to snap endlessly and while it takes a little more time, it is truly the best way to learn - what works for you and your style, what you are selling and what works for your audience.

Take as many pictures as you can. Try different styles, lights, and presentations out on your target market and learn what works. All you need to is to attach that camera to your hip and practice makes perfect!
