Beat Fatigue with a Hearty Breakfast

Beat Fatigue with a Hearty Breakfast

Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism and sets up your day

It is widely accepted that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but with all the branded advertising campaigns, it can be difficult to understand what is actually healthy at breakfast time and what is not.

One common myth is that you need to ‘kick-start’ your day with sugar, but that is incorrect, according to any expert you care to ask. The facts are that if you begin your day with sweet foods, you’ll be chasing that sugar high for the rest of the day.

Sugar should actually be avoided completely. As much as possible, that includes refined white bread, waffles, packaged cereals, jams and chocolate spreads.

Instead, your day should begin with complex carbohydrates, adequate protein and good quality essential fatty acids. That way your metabolism will get the start it needs after several hours of over night fasting. Following sleep, your body might show symptoms of hypoglycemia, which is associated with missing meals. The symptoms can include fatigue, mild headaches, dizziness or shakiness, mild nausea or a lack of concentration. That is why it is so important to give your body and metabolism the right start each morning.

Wholegrain, stone-ground breads, rolled oats, muesli and buckwheat pancakes are some of the best complex carbohydrate options for breakfast. Mix one of those with fish, avocado, eggs, cheese, yoghurt, legumes or tofu to make up the fatty acids and protein you need.
