Science Notes

Chillies are a capsicum and its a natural insect repellent properties are due to its active component, capsaicin. Capsaicin produces a burning sensation to whatever it touches.

Soapy water can be an effective pest control spray in its own right. It works best when sprayed directly onto the pest. Soapy water is effective at killing pests because it is highly adhesive, covers the pest and suffocates the pest.

Related Tip

Pick your chillies only when they are ripe as they will not ripen any further after they leave the tree. The more chillies you pick from your plant, the more it is encouraged to bear fruit so make sure you always pick your ripe chillies.

Chillies are also a very effective poultry wormer if you have laying hens or other birds. (Birds don't have the receptors to capsaicin so are unaffected by eating chilli.) See also Garlic Garden Pest Control Spray.
