Computer cables, keyboards and mouses contribute to the large amount of e-waste going into our landfills.
Computer components contain chemicals which are harmful to our health and to the environment. The majority of computer parts can be recycled.
Because your original manufacturers must accept your old computer back and recycle its parts under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) scheme, you should always check with the retailer when you buy a new one about them taking your old one.
The National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme will take your laptops, televisions, computers, printers and computer products (such as keyboards, monitors, mice and hard drives) for recycling. The scheme will take your device regardless of the brand and no matter how old they are. Officeworks, Harvey Norman and Domayne are the main drop off centres.
Before you recycle your computer, remember to move and/ or delete everything off your computer before you dispose of it.

Science Notes
E waste includes any electrical or battery powered electronic. For example, televisions, computers and computer accessories, and mobile phones. Whitegoods are not classified as e waste.
The amount of e-waste ending up in landfill is continually growing. In one year, approximately 1.6 million computers were sent to landfill.
Related Tip
Recycle any of your unused or broken e waste items when recycling your old computer. Mobile phones, speakers, DVD players or game consoles not in use can either be passed on to another person or taken to e waste recyclers.
