DIY Corkboard

Wine corks seem to be phasing out with screw tops becoming a more popular choice. However, if you have a collection of wine corks or drink wine that uses wine corks, this a perfect repurpose for you.

A collection of corks

An old frame with the glass removed (alternatively make your own frame)

Glue

Varnish or something similar

  1. Cut the corks in half lengthways
  2. Glue the corks onto the frame in your desired pattern
  3. Wait for the glue to dry before spraying the cork frame with varnish to strengthen the corks and to prevent any crumbling which may occur in years to come.

This repurpose is perfect for your household kitchen or in your study area. This corkboard is a great way to remember events, things to do and memos.

Science Notes

Screw tops are becoming more widely used for a number of reasons. Firstly, they are cheaper to manufacture. Secondly, wine corks have an inconsistent rate of aeration. For many wine lovers this is not ideal, the inconsistency can spoil the wine. Screw tops on the other hand have a more consistent rate of aeration.

This has made the recycling of wine corks redundant. Girl Guides, Melbourne Zoo and other initiatives used to collect wine corks to raise money for their various charities.

You can also repurpose your wine cork collection to make wall décor. Glue the halved wine corks onto a board into a pattern and paint them various colours. Be a little creative and make an artwork out of wine corks.
