Easiest Soap Recipe

This soap recipe works every time and is super easy to make.

Ingredients:

4 cups oil (1 litre) – I use a mix of olive oil & coconut oil half & half

1 ½ cups purified cold water (or rain water)

½ cup caustic soda (sodium hydroxide)

10ml of essential oils

Equipment:

Heavy plastic bowl

Measuring cups

Wooden spoon

Molds

Method:

If the coconut oil is solid gently melt in a saucepan and allow to cool to room temperature. Wear a mask, gloves & protective clothing whilst using caustic soda as it will burn if it touches the skin and irritate if vapors are inhaled. Pour water into a heavy plastic dish (do not use metal bowls) and carefully add the caustic soda.  This makes the lye. Allow the lye to cool.

Add the oils to the lye mixture and mix well. Use a stick mixer to emulsify for about 5 mins. The mixture should be thick and you should see trace (scrape a line down the middle and it should be visible for a couple of seconds).  Add essential oils / spices / scrubs etc.

Pour into molds – silicon, the bottom of old cream cartons etc. Allow to set for 24 hours before turning it out and leaving in a cool place to cure for 6 weeks. Leave the soap on the plastic bowl to harden. Scrape off and add hot water to the scrapings to make hand soap.

What a lovely story! Also, I am a soap maker and love the simplicity of this recipe. Great for a beginner! Monday, 24 July 2017

I make this with my son. I send him into the garden to collect herbs and flowers and we use them on the surface to decorate the soaps. I also let him choose spices to colour and scent the soap. It's a great family project! Monday, 24 July 2017

Science Notes
Soap making is called 'saponification' and it's pretty simple actually.
Saponification involves a chemical reaction between an acid (oil) and a base (caustic soda) to form a salt (the soap).
