Energy Saving Tips for your Heating System in Winter

Heating and cooling systems account for an average of 40% of household’s energy consumption

Managing, maintaining and making small adjustments can make a big difference to your energy use.

  1. Support your heating system by stopping heat escaping:

    • Insulate your ceilings and walls
    • Ensure that all windows and doors are closed and properly sealed
    • Close your curtains or blinds, but make sure the windows letting in the sun's warmth aren't covered
    • Put rugs on timber floors, concrete and tiles

  2. Remove and clean air filters each season of use
  3. Choose an appropriate thermostat temperature - 18 to 20 degrees in winter.
  4. Use the reverse cycle on your fan to push warm air back down.
  5. Protect and shade any outdoor components of your heating unit from direct sun
  6. Get your chimney cleaned each year

Science Notes

The optimal temperature to set your heating system to is 18 degrees in winter, but you might find this a little cool.

As you choose your temperature however, know that every degree different to the outside temperature, uses approximately 10% more energy to operate.

Windows can be responsible for up to 60% of the heat loss from a house, dependent upon the amount of windows and window treatments.

If you are renovating, be aware that high thermal mass materials like brick, concrete and stone are more energy efficient than timber and various veneers.
