First time Mama? Here's Your Hospital Bag Essentials

There is lots to think about, at the tail end of a pregnancy - which pram to buy, how you're going to shave those hairy, fluid-retaining legs, and what on earth you'll need to pack for your hospital stay

I am Wendy from Our Joey and I have gone through this journey twice, so I wanted to share the essentials to pack for your Hospital Bag. I have included a snapshot of the essentials below.

Things for Mama

It's important to think about yourself before you get to hospital because once you have given birth, your whole world is going to change and you might be way less clear headed straight after birth than you are right now.

  • Maternity pads for post birth
  • Oversized black knickers, and stretchy black plants, are a godsend in those early days, giving your much-aggrieved hoo-ha, or incision site, a wide berth, and disguising those bulky pads, and potential leaks.
  • Nipple shields, ointments and a double electric breast pump, will make your life a helluva lot easier in those early days, if you're planning to breastfeed, and give the sisters a well-deserved break.
  • Essential oil diffuser from home, to diffuse calming oils during labour, and antibacterial blends, for the remainder of your stay.
  • Luxe toiletries, to make you feel special

Things for bub

Children's hospital staff are amazing but if you want to bring your piece of home in for your bub from day one, here's the basics. (More in the checklist.)

  • Pack plenty of outfit changes as there will be many spews and accidents including onesies, bodysuits (to keep bubs warm) and socks
  • Swaddles for helping bubs feel warm and secure
  • Eco disposable nappies & wipes
  • Baby bottom balm
  • Organic baby wash

I wish you all the very best for a safe, healthy and blissful birth, for both mama and bebe.  Remember to take care of you, as well xx Here is a bigger checklist that might be easier to refer to.

Baby Organisers are a great investment. They are a fantastic way of knowing you have all the essentials on board and they slip easily into a pram, the car or a bag. We make a soft organic cotton one, but there are heaps of options around.
