GM Technology Vs Clean, Green Farming

Why should GM technology and clean, green farming be exclusive of one another?

I’ve been researching, writing and producing GM technology stories for more than 20 years and it’s always puzzled me why this extraordinary leap forward in agriculture is regarded by many as something equivalent to Armageddon.

Consider the following:

  • It’s estimated that over one trillion meals made all or partially from GM food have been consumed worldwide since GM crops were first grown in the 1990’s.
  • Nobody – I repeat NOBODY – has ever been proven to have become ill by consuming food made all or partially from GM crops.
  • In 2012 more than 17 million farmers in 28 countries, including Australia, planted GM crops.

And how’s this for an environmental positive?

In 2011, GM cropping practices were directly responsible for reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 23 billion kilograms – that’s the equivalent of removing 10 million cars from the roads of the world.

Some irony that GM cropping is advancing the green living cause so effectively.
