How To Consume Less Meat

Many meat eaters have meatless meals without really thinking much about it.

But somehow when it comes to making a conscious commitment to dropping some meat days, it seems hard.  It's actually as easy as not thinking about it, but let's give it a go.

  • Realise that you are probably not eating meat every day anyway. Think about what you eat on those days and why you like it.
  • Set one or two meatless meal days a week and try different dishes.
  • Replace two or three other days with chicken and seafood.
  • Swap traditional ‘meat heavy’ meals with those that are meatless, such as soups, salads or pasta salads.
  • Stay away from 'meat replacement' recipes and go with recipes that make the vegetable or legume the hero. They will be tastier and more interesting.
  • Make like a master chef. There are so many tasty salads and vegetable dishes around. A whole world of tastes waiting to be discovered and shared.

Science Notes
According to the experts, transitioning to a diet with less meat not only saves you money, but can also improve your health.

Vegetarians reportedly are at a lower risk of heart disease than meat eaters, and also consume fewer calories and fat. Additionally, people who consume a diet high in plant-based foods typically benefit from more fibre, vitamins and nutrients.

Related Tip
If you are used to eating meat regularly and choose to consume less of it, ensure that you adjust your food intake appropriately. Meat is full of protein, iron and zinc and if you reduce the amount of meat you consume, you need to eat other foods which are full of these benefits.
