Limit your Hair-Dryer Use to Lower Carbon Emissions

If you've got big hair and a big commitment to reducing your carbon footprint, then turning off the hair dryer is one way to limit the C02 emissions you produce, do your hair a favour and save a few dollars on your electricity bill at the same time.

You can reduce the amount of C02 emissions you produce, by giving up or limiting your hair dryer use - and giving your hair a break at the same time.

To simply reduce the amount of time you spend with the hair dryer on, towel dry your hair before you pick up the hair dryer. Blow drying damp hair instead of wet will take half the time, use less emissions and leave your hair much healthier.

Alternatively, give up the hair-dryer completely and go for the natural look. Live up the frizz, curl, wave or whatever is the natural you!

And to really double up your efforts without doing anything other than choosing a good hairdresser, make sure you go to a salon who is a member of Sustainable Salons Australia. That way you will know that pretty much everything used in the salon, including your hair is recycled. You can check your salon on Sustainable Salon's website or go to Recycle Guides and put in your location / Body / Hair and see who's close by.

Science Notes

Hair-dryers contribute between 500 and 1300 grams of CO2 an hour to the atmosphere, so dependent upon your use, this is around 25 kilograms of carbon dioxide (C02) every year.

Carbon Dioxide (C02) is naturally present in the atmosphere. However, carbon dioxide is also the primary greenhouse gas emitted.

The problem arises as human activities which emit carbon dioxide, such as electricity, transportation and industry needs rise and the environment cannot remove the growing C02 levels from the atmosphere.

Damage can also occur to your hair if blow dried too often or if you do not provide your hair with the necessary nutrients.

Ensure that you wash your hair often, but not every night: this will take away your hair’s nutrients.
