Make A Recycled Paper Bowl

Make A Recycled Paper Bowl

This is a great DIY! Not only do you get to use up some used paper but you get a bowl perfect for stationery or other storage.

A pile of scrap paper

Wooden skewer

Sticky Tape

Scissors

PVA Glue

  1. Cut the scrap paper length ways into 1 inch strips
  2. Tape the end of a paper strip to an end of a wooden skewer
  3. Roll this paper strip around itself
  4. Tape the next piece of paper to the end of the previous strip and keep rolling around itself
  5. Continue adding more strips (it should start to resmeble a flat pancake)
  6. Once you have reached your desired width, cut the skewer so that it is flush with the paper roll
  7. Glue the last 5 layers together (this will be the rim of your bowl)
  8. Gently push out the centre of the roll to get the desired shaper of the bowl
  9. Once happy with the bowls shape, coat the bowl in a diluted PVA mix (PVA glue and water) and apply to the bowl. This will give the bowl strength

Science Notes

It is estimated that recycling just one tonne of paper can save 13 trees. Unfortunately paper can only be recycled a limited number of times – in most cases, up to 8 times. This is because each time the paper is recycled the individual fibres that make up the paper become weaker and weaker.

The paper recycling process:

1. Paper and water are mixed together to create pulp
2. The pulp is then cleaned and screened. Item such as staples, wire and plastic are removed
3. The clean pulp is then treated and heated to remove all the ink and glue
4. The clean pulp is then added with more water and paper-making additives
5. The treated clean pulp is then dried and pressed to create paper sheets.

When you are about to scrunch up and throw away a piece of paper, stop yourself and think can I reuse this. If only one side of the piece of paper has been used, store it in a drawer and use it at a later stage when you need to take notes or create a shopping list.>
