Make A Scrap Paper Book

Recycled piece of cardboard (cereal box, biscuit box etc)

Scrap paper (blank on one side)

String of some kind (twine, yarn, shoe lace)

Large sewing needle

Scissors

Ruler

1 large bulldog clip

  1. Cut your recycled piece of cardboard so that you have two identical pieces of cardboard.
  2. These will be the front and back covers of your book so ensure they are the right size for you.
  3. Fold and cut your scrap paper so that they are the same size if not smaller than your front and back covers
  4. Place the pieces of scrap paper together, with the blank pages facing up
  5. Place the pile of scrap paper between the front and back pieces of cardboard. You will need to decide if you want the coloured side or blank sides showing. For example, if you are using an old cereal box, do you want the cereal box advertising showing or hidden
  6. Using the bulldog clip, secure the pile of the scrap paper and the front and back covers. Ensure that they are all lined up neatly.
  7. Punch four holes along the left hand side of the book. Ensure that these are evenly spaced.
  8. Thread your string in the holes and tie securely
  9. Voila, a scrap paper book.

Science Notes

It is estimated that recycling just one tonne of paper can save 13 trees. Unfortunately paper can only be recycled a limited number of times – in most cases, up to 8 times. This is because each time the paper is recycled the individual fibres that make up the paper become weaker and weaker.

  1. The paper recycling process:
  2. Paper and water are mixed together to create pulp
  3. The pulp is then cleaned and screened. Item such as stapes, wire and plastic are removed
  4. The clean pulp is then treated and heated to remove all the ink and glue
  5. The clean pulp is then added with more water and paper-making additives
  6. The treated clean pulp is then dried and pressed to create paper sheets.
