Molasses Garden Pest Control Spray

Molasses Garden Pest Control Spray

For a broad garden pest spray, combine the ingredients and pour into a spray bottle:

1 tablespoon molasses dissolved in 1 litre warm water

1 teaspoon pure liquid soap

Spray regularly over the top and underside of leaves of all plants attacked by cabbage moth, caterpillars and other chewing pests.  If you want to further strengthen your mixture, add a little vinegar.  With the help of the soap, this spray is an effective sticky spray pest control agent due to its thick consistency which can be used to suffocate mites, scale, and other soft-bodied insects.

For best results, use in the months of September, December, June, and March.

Science Notes

Molasses is a thick black syrupy liquid produced as a by product of sugar cane processing. It is both a plant pest controller and a plant nutrient because it also contains many trace elements and carbohydrates which feed beneficial micro-organisms. Molasses is also an excellent chelating agent.

Soapy water can be an effective pest control spray on its own. It works best when sprayed directly onto the pest. Soapy water is effective at killing pests because it covers the pest and suffocates the pest.
