Fenugreek (Trigonella Foenum-Graecum) One of the most well-known galactogogue herbs that has been used for centuries to increase breast milk production. Studies have shown that the active compound in Fenugreek seeds stimulates the pituitary gland which in turn releases prolactin. It’s this increase in prolactin that is believed to be the reason for fenugreek’s galactogogue effect.

It is also used as a tonic to improve digestion. Fenugreek has also been shown to be beneficial for balancing blood sugar levels.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgaris) is another effective herb commonly used to increase milk production. It is also beneficial for relieving gas and upset stomachs, and can also benefit babies with colic, gas, reflux and indigestion, through their mother’s milk. It can also assist with triggering the letdown reflex, beneficial for working mums who have found they’ve stopped responding to the pump.

Raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus) Raspberry leaf tea is not only beneficial for pregnant women it is also very useful for women after they give birth and while breastfeeding. During the postpartum period your uterus starts to shrink back down to size, breastfeeding aids this by encouraging uterine contractions. Raspberry leaf tea can also help speed up the process by helping tone the uterus. Raspberry leaf tea is a great source of iron, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin C. It is also considered a galactogogue herb as it can help increase mother’s milk supply.

Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a nutrient rich herb that is considered a galactogogue, helping to boost nursing mothers milk supply. Alfalfa is also highly nutritious herb providing vitamins and minerals required for milk production. It is also beneficial for improving digestion.

Lemon verbena (Aloysia citrodora) is a lovely calming herb that will help improve women's milk supply by reducing their stress levels. Stress is a common cause of reduced milk production. Lemon verbena can also help improve digestive complaints such as indigestion, cramping and bloating.

Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a very nutritious herb that is rich in mineral such as iron, calcium, magnesium and beta-carotene and vitamin C. Nettle has been used for centuries to help treat mothers who are anaemic after giving birth. Nettle is commonly used to help boost milk production
