Okinawan Food & Water Tips for Life Expectancy

It is a fact that (all things being equal), you can eat yourself into old age with the right food choices and keep yourself internally fighting fit. The Japanese Okinawans live to 110, eating three servings of fish a week, along with plenty of whole grains, vegetables, soy, and more konbu seaweed than anyone else in the world, along with as squid and octopus.

You too can age gracefully by living like an Okinawan or just following a healthy diet:

  1. Follow a healthy diet, packed with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and lean meat.
  2. Add in a variety of ‘Super Foods’ to your diet including dark chocolate, blueberries, grapes, garlic, olive oil, avocado, beans, pu-erh tea and green tea.
  3. Increase your intake of oily fish including salmon and tuna. If you don’t like the taste of fish, ensure you take an omega-3 supplement.
  4. Stay hydrated by drinking at least two litres of water a day.
  5. Reduce your portion sizes!

Science Notes

According to researchers at the Institute of Health Ageing at University College London, by reducing your food intake by 40 percent you could extend your life by 20 years as well as protect against cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration and cancer.

Researchers cautioned this study was still in its early days, but reducing food intake is a quality of the Okinawans in Japan, one of cultures experiencing the highest rates of life expectancy in the world.
