Save Energy with Your Dishwasher

These tips will help you to save electricity and water as well as taking care of your dishwasher

  • When buying a Dishwasher, check the Energy Rating Label.

  • Always clean the filter between washes, a blocked filter will mean using more electricity.

  • Only run the dishwasher with a full load.

  • Scrape plates before packing the dishwasher, this will ensure that no blockages occur and make the cleaning process easier.

  • If your dishwasher is more than 7 years old, rinse plates.

  • Place the dirtiest dishes closest to the middle of dishwasher.

  • Make sure nothing tall is blocking  your spray arm.

  • Use the setting that relates to the state and type of your dishes. Pots for pots, light for small or cleanish washes.

  • Clean your dishwasher occasionally by sprinkling some bicarbonate soda on the bottom and putting vinegar in the rinse cycle.

Science Notes

By rinsing dishes instead of scraping them, you are wasting valuable water and energy. Dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers account for approximately 30% of your household energy consumption.

At the same time, these white goods account for around 53% of household greenhouse gas emissions.

The Energy Rating Level Scheme is mandatory for a range of appliances including dishwashers. The label informs you of the product’s comparative energy efficiency and the estimated energy consumption.
