Nature’s gym is free, has many many health benefits and may actually be better exercise. Whether it be in your local park, your neighbourhood, a mountain hike or a river kayak, exercising outdoors is a great way to feel and look great. Apart from the calming meditative effect of being amongst nature, here are a few benefits:

  • Improving your mood
  • Decreasing stress levels
  • Natural surroundings can have calming effects on the body
  • Increased commitment to exercise
  • Increased enthusiasm and self-esteem
  • You potentially burn more calories when exercising outdoors as you deal with environmental factors such as wind, heat or cold and uneven terrain.

Science Notes

Ecotherapy is defined as the healthy interaction we have with the Earth. Spending time outdoors and completing tasks such as hiking, swimming, canoeing and camping can greatly benefit our health.

Ecotherapists claim that participating in these sorts of activities can improve self-esteem, lower blood pressure and improve depression. By connecting with the earth we are able to feel calm, relaxed and feel more balanced.
