There are two go-to places for most people when they start to think of eco-ing up their life. The first is replacing plastic bags with reusable bags and the second is replacing their cleaning products with less toxic versions.Next bottled water is out and reusable containers are in, then maybe a salad herb pot plant or two is parked on the kitchen window sill. Some people then start to replace plastic containers and buy glass until one day they start to wonder, 'Why am I tossing out the glass containers I get for free when I buy processed food?' Which of course is just fine until the day arrives when they ask themselves why they are even buying all that processed food and lose their glass jar supply. Such a tangled eco web we weave. For me, the most eco thing in my kitchen is a bunch of spatulas. To be honest, it wasn't eco that drove me to acquiring spatulas in the first place. It was my house's old drains. As time went by, I started to realise just how much good food used to go down my sink. Food that someone might eat - even if it was the cat, dog or chooks.Somewhat embarrassingly for an eco-miester, I now have 12 spatulas - which I have a bunch of fine excuses for and can explain another time. The fabulous thing about many eco home products is that they accessible, inexpensive and many are evolutions of what grandma used. We have launched ekko with some of our home favourites, but there are literally thousands of home eco products for every aspect of your home from thousands of sellers across Australia and we hope to eventually have them all here. One last word for your soul. Do your key eco purchases in style. Don't skimp. For instance, when you think of re-usable shopping bags, don't fill up your cupboard with those dreary fake green things you see at the supermarket. Think of multi use bags like this one from Nanu. Cool, sophisticated, recycled and eco. You'll be so much more pleased with your choice and anyway, it will have cost you so much that you will actually be compelled to use it! And there is plenty of room inside to hide the dreary green bags for their short outing at the supermarket. We hope you enjoy our starter eco home products on ekko. If you are a trader or know of anyone who is, please tell them about ekko. We'd love to see them here and accessible to everyone.Image: Shutterstock
