Thirteen years ago when Lindy McLeod was visiting France, she admired the women of Paris rushing home in the evenings and on the weekends with their seriously chic shopping baskets, brimming with fresh produce. Lindy bought some of these handwoven market baskets for herself, and they soon became an indispensable part of her life. Not only did the baskets look great but they also proved to be extremely hardwearing and sustainable.

So on her return to Australia, Lindy founded The Market Basket Co, making these handmade French baskets available to everyone in Australia. In 2015, Lindy retired and Tutty Welsh took over the company.

Tutty has introduced new basket styles while still continuing to stock the favourites. Tutty hopes The Market Basket Co can help steer Australian's away from plastic bags, choosing to use these natural and sustainable market baskets instead.

The market baskets have been a phenomenal success wherever they have been sold.

They are genuine French-style baskets imported from Morocco. Each one is handmade using traditional methods and techniques, which makes each basket unique. The baskets are handwoven from strips palm leaves from a species of date palm - Phoenix Dactylifera. The strips are then sewn together and the basket built up in "rounds" into the traditional triangle shape - variations of which can be found in countries all around the Mediterranean. The more rounds in a basket, the bigger it is! The basket handles are all made of genuine Moroccan leather and stitched firmly to the baskets which ensures durability. Leather handles are either short so the baskets can be carried in by hand, or longer to go over the shoulder.

Naturally, market baskets are perfect as shopping bags for envirnmentally caring Australians and they are extremely versatile. They make for an ideal picnic basket, work superbly as a beach bag, and add a touch of rustic style as home storage baskets.
