Why your Car's Tyre Pressure is Important

Eco and good economics are often interchangeable

Your car is supported by your tyres and have a surprisingly big influence on how your car runs. An efficient car emits less emissions and is cheaper to maintain.

In the same way as it's important to keep your boot clear, it's good practice to have your tyre pressure checked regularly to keep your car running optimally. There are four main benefits of having the right tyre pressure in your tyres:

  1. Better grip on the road

  2. Increased fuel economy

  3. Increased tyre life

  4. Increased car handling

Check the tyre placard to check what the tyre pressure should be.

Depending on the make of your car, the tyre placard could be in your sun visor, in the door edge, in the glove box or sometimes in the fuel filler door.

Science Notes

Follow your manufacturers guidelines for pressure.

Over inflated tyres decrease contact with road, affect braking, tyre wear may be greater and car handling and comfort may be compromised.

Under inflated tyres increase contact with road and therefore increased friction from tyre against road, affecting overall efficiency and your tyre wear may be greater.

Related Tip

Depending on how often and how far you drive, you should check your tyre pressure every few months.

Petrol stations should have a tyre pressure pump for your convenience.
