Earth Overshoot Day is earliest ever - 29 July 2019

Good morning Vietnam! As we discover that globally we've consumed our year supply of earth's resources by 29 July, Vietnam leads the world in conscious consumption, lasting to 21 December

The Global Foot print Network reported yesterday that we have used a years worth of resources, as of yesterday. The Footprint Network track humanity's use of our natural resources and is the only metric that compares the resource demand of individuals, governments, and businesses against what Earth can renew and each year reports on when we've used it.

Unfortunately the date gets earlier every year. The good news is that the website has a pile of downloadable free data for anyone - educators, media, analysts and change-makers to help get information to the public.

Since the seventies, this is what our consumption of our natural resources looks like year on year.

Different countries pass the date at different times dependent upon their use of resources. Australia passed the date on March 31st. Vietnam, on the other hand is the closest country to lasting a full year, at December 21. #respect

Australia needs 4.1 earths to sustain the way we live and consume natural resources today.  Mathis Wackernagel, co-inventor of Ecological Footprint accounting and founder of Global Footprint Network said:

“WE HAVE ONLY GOT ONE EARTH – THIS IS THE ULTIMATELY DEFINING CONTEXT FOR HUMAN EXISTENCE. WE CAN’T USE 1.75 WITHOUT DESTRUCTIVE CONSEQUENCES.”

Wackernagel goes on to say that humanity will eventually have to operate within the means of Earth’s ecological resources, whether that balance is restored by disaster or by design.

“COMPANIES AND COUNTRIES THAT UNDERSTAND AND MANAGE THE REALITY OF OPERATING IN A ONE-PLANET CONTEXT ARE IN A FAR BETTER POSITION TO NAVIGATE THE CHALLENGES OF THE 21ST CENTURY."
