Farmwall's Home Farming Program

Farmwall's Home Farming Program

Farmwall are now offering a home-grown urban farming program so that anyone, anywhere can grow microgreens

Farmwall urban farmers have left their city offices like everyone else under COVID-19 restrictions and are offering their courses to everyone at home. If you even wanted to grow your own food, especially if you have limited space, this is an incredible opportunity to learn how to grow your own microgreens, with the support of a professional team and a full kit of everything you need.

You can get started, backed by a team of professionals, who would normally be tending Farmwalls in corporate offices around the cities. (And if you, like me, are still waiting for all those online seeds you ordered to arrive, this is probably a way more useful alternative than standing about scratching your head about where you will put them anyway.)

How the course works

The idea is that after the course you will be set up with the skills and materials to be successfully growing food at home. It's a 14 week course that allows you to literally grow and learn 'on the job', with a team of professionals behind you.

Farmwall supply you with the complete urban farm kit and then teach you how to construct it, grow your food and maintain it. Here's what's in the kit that comes with the course:

  • A fish tank (including fish, gravel, driftwood and filtration)
  • An aquaponic growing kit (growing $25 worth of microgreens each week, including seeds and growing media for 14 weeks + grow lights)
  • Hydroponic growing kit (growing 9 vegetable crops at the time, every 3 weeks, including nutrients for 14 weeks, + grow lights)
  • Tools to set up your balcony or back yard wicking bed
  • Tools to set up your own compost worm farm
  • Tools to grow sea monkeys to feed your fish
  • 14 educational modules, released weekly, in pdf format + short video tutorials
  • Weekly zoom chats an Q&A with Farmwall Home’s urban farmers and guest experts

You can expect to learn about a variety of different urban growing techniques, using aquaponically grown microgreens to improve your health, growing salad greens with a recycled hydroponic setup, Wicking bed planter boxes, cultivating a zero-waste mindset in your approach to growing and the benefits of composting and worm farming.

The program gives you the chance to learn and grow alongside a cohort of peers who are undertaking the program at the same time, as well as receive constant support through your urban farming journey.

Sign up, timeframes and fees

This first course is a pilot and as an initial guinea pig, the fee to participate is ridiculously low for what you get, at $250. This includes everything. A kit is delivered to you, ready to go. The course is limited to 100 people and closes for sign up at midnight on 23 April. The program starts just after 27th April.

First of many

Farmwall's long term ambition is to develop and refine this program further to better suit the needs of those who want to get started with growing at home. By participating in this first run and helping build it, you are contributing to the future of urban farming education in Australia. And that’s amazing.
