You will find that many sales retailers will offer to recycle your old laptop when you buy a new one.

Laptops are a more environmentally friendly choice than a computer for a range of reasons, but with their built in rate of obsolescence, the number being purchased and discarded is growing dramatically so please recycle or reuse them.

Dependent upon how old your laptop is, you can often resell it online or take it to Cash Converters who might give you some money for it.

One excellent destination for your old laptop is a child. Once stripped of all data, even if it is a few years old, it will easily be good for young children to play games or undertake learning activity.

The National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme will take your laptop for recycling; regardless of the brand and no matter how old it is. Officeworks, Harvey Norman and Domayne are the main drop off centres.

If you are selling or disposing of your laptop, remember to transfer and/ or delete all the information on your laptop hard drive.

Science Notes
Old laptops are an excellent source of secondary raw materials. Inside a laptop is a whirl of microchips, LCD screen, resistors, capacitors, wires, plastic and metal casing, hard drive and lithium-ion battery etc.

Pretty much all these elements can be recovered through a manual disassembly process to separate glass, cables, batteries, ferrous and non ferrous metals, circuit board, copper and plastic. Each of the components then goes to the various specialist recyclers.
