Pesticides and Container Disposal
Pesticides and Container Disposal
Garden
Updated 2 January 2020 03:20 PM
Pesticides and their containers are hazardous and require special handling. Household hazardous waste programs are an ideal location to dispose of your unwanted pesticides and its container.
Ideally, all pesticide will be used. Always refer to the product label – it should recommend the best method for disposal of any leftover pesticide.
Any commercial pesticide spray contractor will take care of the disposal process themselves. If using pesticide yourself, your local council will generally have a free drop off day under their hazardous waste program. Find your Council here or contact them for more information.
Pesticide containers are usually recyclable but require special treatment – triple rinsing, processing and other measures to ensure their safety.
NEVER burn pesticide containers – toxic gas will be released into the atmosphere.

Science Notes
Pesticides are poisonous to the environment, wildlife and humans.
Pesticides discarded down the sink or drain may interfere with water treatment systems or pollute waterways. This is extremely dangerous for aquatic life and anything that shares their eco system.
