First there are millions (billions) of us. And if millions of us choose to take just a little more personal eco responsibility for what we buy, we can make a big difference. One way to do that is to be more aware of what the products we buy are made of, as well as where and how they were made - their eco credentials. Knowing more about the eco credentials of the products we buy helps both consumers and vendors to easily make more eco choices, to minimise exploitation of others, maximise support of good and to understand the trade offs that our seemingly simple decisions might require.
The kind of future we choose for our children and ourselves is decided by the choices we make today. We need to consume & waste less, choose products & services that contribute to a better planet, while being way more conscious of the impact of our actions on others.
Never let anyone tell you that your choices aren't important. If you ever doubted how true this is, look into the eyes of your child - or if you have no children - look in the mirror. It's the little actions, learnings and changes every day that create the people we all become. It's the choices parents make, from when a child is a minute old and completely reliant, that define the man he becomes. And those men and women go on to influence the world around them. In big ways and small ways. It all counts.
Sure there are certain things that are out of our control, but much of what we and our children become are well within our control. We simply need to decide if we want to take control or not.
1ST WORLD CONSUMERS HAVE ENORMOUS COLLECTIVE WALLET POWER . OUR BEHAVIOUR ALSO HAS A DIRECT IMPACT ON OTHERS. NO ONE CONSUMES IN ISOLATION. EVERYTHING WE CONSUME HAS AN IMPACT.
We know that one of the single biggest reasons that people don't try harder to be more eco is that it's confusing, overwhelming and often dis-empowering. Anyway, the truth is that we all impact the planet in some way. So we've found a way, through an algorithm and using data that is already available, to help you to make the best decision you can, for your lifestyle.
CONSUMERS AND TRADERS CAN NOW BE WAY MORE AWARE OF WHAT THEY TRADE OFF. ORGANIC PRODUCTS MIGHT BE ANIMAL BASED. VEGAN PRODUCTS MIGHT CONTAIN PALM OIL. YOUR FAV 100% NATURAL HAND CREAM MIGHT BE PACKAGED IN RECYCLED PLASTIC. The point of Ekko Score is to simply show a score by each standard to allow you to make an informed decision that aligns with your values; be they organic, vegan, palm oil free, handmade or local.
The eco credentials of most consumer products that exist have been verified or claimed in some manner. Using appropriate technology, these verifications or claims can be accessed, aggregated and passed through an algorithm to give a ‘best knowledge’ eco score to any product. We worked with computer scientists at RMIT to rank and weight certifications to create the Ekko Score. This is how, by declaring your product's certifications, your product achieves an 'eco footprint score' against each standard and an overall score.
From today, the Body Care Categories have begun scoring and you can see the first products already scored. Once we have 1,000 products scored in these categories and we've refined our logic with everyone's feedback, we will move to the next 10,000.
We are using machine learning (Artificial Intelligence) to train the Ekko Score model and over time, we will be able to automatically score products and save Traders a lot of time, as well as providing them with information about options related to sourcing for even better products. If you have any questions, feedback, comments or alternative views, please comment on this page or Contact Us.
