Green Cleaning - Basic Kit

Ditch all that ghastly poisonous stuff from under your sink for a few simple cleaning products that are pantry staples

Whether you are cleaning the walls, benches, clothes or dishes, pretty much every cleaning recipe you will find on this site or around the internet, contain the same basic ingredients.

Primary cleaning ingredients:

  • Bicarbonate of Soda
  • Eucalyptus Oil
  • Vinegar

  • Lemon

Eucalyptus Oil is very versatile and readily available. It's a natural cleaner, freshener, disinfectant, sanitiser, deodoriser and exceptional glue/label cleaner. (It's also a useful insect deterrent.)

Other important cleaning ingredients:

  • Sodium peroxide
  • Essential Oils you love to smell
  • Soap Nuts

Use Soap Nuts to wash your clothes. I prefer to grind them, but you can boil them up to make a liquid detergent or just use them in a fabric bag for clothes.

You will find heaps of recipes on this site and online for just about any cleaning situation you can imagine with these products. For example, DIY Eco Dishwasher Powder That Really Works, and Citrus-Infused Cleaning Solution.

I use plain vinegar as my surface cleaner, works wonders. I am careful not to use it on wooden surfaces though and it can strip the shine off.

I actually only have 2 ingredients under my sink for household cleaning - vinegar and bicarb! That pretty much covers everything Monday, 7 December 2015

Science Notes

Vinegar and  and bicarbonate soda are broad based cleaners with anti fungal, anti bacterial qualities. Hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidising agent and like lemon, is commonly used to bleach things.

These products variously act as whiteners, brighteners, sanitisers and have antiseptic qualities which makes them an effective and natural cleaning agents.
