Piñatex - Pineapple Leather

Piñatex - Pineapple Leather

You are looking at the inventor of Pineapple Leather.

A couple of years ago, Dr Carmen Hijosa invented an alternative leather product made from the leaves of a pineapple. Leaves that would otherwise have gone to landfill. And it's a damned fine product.

Dr Carmen Hijosa used to be a huge manufacturer of animal leather, but has more recently become a vegan pin up girl  - as some of the world's biggest brands (and smallest too) are using pineapple leather (Piñatex) to fashion bags and other leather goods.

"IT TURNS OUT THAT PINEAPPLE LEAVES CONTAIN ONE OF THE FINEST CELLULOSE FIBRES IN EXISTENCE."

And that makes them a very good candidate as a leather alternative. It takes about 16 pineapples to make a square metre of pineapple leather and you have a product that is much lighter and more flexible than animal leather.

One of the great advantages of pineapple leather is that it can be made to look like any kind of leather, including snakeskin. And it's being made into bags, shoes, jackets, purses, sofas and car seats.

Many global designers like Hugo Boss, and the completely divine Edun and Altiir are now using the material across ranges of bags, shoes and clothing.
