Vertical Gardens

Ditch the greengrocer for your balcony or terrace wall

Herbs and vegetables are incredibly easy to grow in your apartment, office or outdoors in a vertical garden without sacrificing space. And so are succulents and any small plant.

And there are so many different ways to achieve a stunning vertical garden. Pots, containers, recycled gutters, as well as easy diy systems around to help you set up your own vertical gardens really easily.

Vertical gardening does exactly what it says on the tin - rather than arranging your horticultural dreams in a plane or a raised garden bed, plants are instead held in pouches, tubes, old gutters - whatever works - in a vertical arrangement, attached to walls or assembled in self stacking units. If you've got a boring wall space, some spare balcony or fence, a little imagination goes a long way!

There are endless diy options online or you can get something custom for you space by someone like Sustainable Garden Design in Perth. The best option for you really depends on your real estate, your experience, access to water, space and the materials you choose to use.

There are indoor options, balcony options, garden fence options and more.  Some are hydroponic based and some use soil.

This is Schiavello's vertical wall frame designed by Joost Bakker is a great diy template. It is simple, flexible and you can move pots around it very easily, but it does require a little of your own skill.

If you aren't a gardener and are keen to dive into a kitchen or office garden, perhaps start with a commercial system. Commercial systems like the Windowfarm system, have usually thought for you of all the plant watering and nutrient needs and you will have a better chance of initial success. You can even buy vertical garden systems now from Bunnings.

Or get serious and bring in an expert like Sustainable Garden Design.
