Huon Bush Retreats is an eco-tourism village south from Hobart, Tasmania. Like many Australian eco retreats, environmental benefits are built into every aspect of the retreat and go far further than green wash.
Renewable energy, protected forest, neutral water and heating cycles and other features combine to produce over 3800 tonnes per year net carbon benefit. Virtually all the land Huon Bush Retreats operates on is vegetated and most is forest.
Carbon is absorbed by the trees, soil and other vegetation. The carbon that is stored in the old growth and rain forests at Huon Bush Retreats was set to be bulldozed and burnt by the previous owners. By saving this land, the carbon was been kept locked out of the atmosphere and Huon were able to extend this wonderful retreat at the same time. How does carbon credits math work?Absorption accounting adopted from Department of Climate Change methodology, shows sequestration and amortized storage at Huon Bush Retreats of 4235 tonnes CO2 / year. Emissions have been minimized by a combination of high and low tech solutions. Assessment using Green Globe Lite shows 0.01 tonnes CO2 per guest night, totaling 208 tonnes CO2 / year. Huon have also accounted for ½ the guest release of CO2 during averaged visits to Tasmania, at 129 tonnes CO2 / year. Adding all this up, the total CO2 balance is 3898 net tonnes per year carbon positive. At Huon Bush Retreats, you can relax, explore and experience nature and know that you are doing something good for the environment.
