Redefining the Old Straw Hat

Redefining the Old Straw Hat

Plastic is so last week, but this hat is new

Put your old plastic to good use. This tip could be of exceptional value to anyone who has given up plastic and looking for options to use up what's in the cupboard. (And really highlight just how useless all those plastic straws and other single use plastic is.)

Hats. If you are looking for a Fascinator or hat for the races, we have rounded up some upcycle inspiration for you. We couldn't find actual Aussie eco milliners who might make any of these, but would love to hear of any you know. In the meantime, here is a truly inspirational set of options to copy or play off.

The best news is that you need look no further than your pantry and spare drawers for most of these upcycled and natural hats, including the headline haute couture hat above by Tomaas. Possibly the best use of plastic wrap and straws ever seen.

Or you could round up your old plastic forks and a bit more plastic wrap and make one of these:

Tomaas is an NYC photojournalist who shot this series with Ford model Lisette for an exhibition called Plastic Fantastic.

Then there is Russian Paper artist, Asya Kozina, who designs intricate head ornaments with carefully cut paper shapes.  (Warning - these might take a little longer to make and you might need to get the kids involved.)

Kozina says, ‘Our new series is a combination of old and new luxury, where the skyscraper rises at the top of an ornate hairstyle, and the plane is decorated with flowers and ostrich feathers.’

If you haven't quite made it far enough up the social ladder and into the Members or the Car Park at Flemington, you'll have to fend for yourself for food. So here's a thought to put your packaging to good use and perhaps whip this little number up as soon as you finish snacking. Preferably just before fashions on the field parade. (Just a word. To be clear. If you don't know what the Car Park is, you definitely have not made it.)

Or finally, this number is for you if you are racing out the door or arrive at the Members and realise you have completely forgotten your hat. Just grab whatever's close in a vase near you. These Australian wildflowers are a great tip and will last for ages and not wilt if it's hot.

Whatever you choose to make, you will have saved yourself enough money to have a tilt on the main race. Good luck!  (With the race and your hat.)

Now might be a good time for me to confess that none of these are quite my style, but if you have the panache to pull one off, good luck to you!  Otherwise, please do go sustainable with your hat - there are so many fab options around.
