Vegan Ice Cream just went Avocado

Vegan Ice Cream just went Avocado

If you live in Perth, you get to taste a new vegan ice cream made from seconds avocados

Gluten-free, allergen-free and high in monounsaturated fats, Gelavo is made mostly from avocado, lime juice, water, sugar and canola oil. has been developed  by food technologists Andrew Tilley and Anthea Rodoreda.

The Curtin University graduates developed the idea three years ago as part of their food science studies. With help from the university alumni under Curtin Accelerate, a 10-week program providing support and guidance to commercialise a business idea, Gelavo was born.

Anthea says that rapid growth in WA avocado production in recent years had increased waste volumes to the point where they could source enough to launch their business.

Gelavo is on sale around Perth and comes in 4 flavours, Coffee, Banana, Original and Chocolate. The pair claim the ice cream is Australia's first shelf-stable avocado based vegan ice cream and point out that it does not contain any coconut or tree nuts.

The difference between this ice-cream and other dairy-free alternatives is the avocado makes it much creamier.  In the chocolate and coffee flavours, the avocado taste is not recognisable. Sure wish I was in Perth sometime soon.
