Why freeze winter strawberries in compostable plastic

Freezing your winter strawberries just got way safer. Finally there's a home compostable freezer bag on the market

Biobag's new Food & Freezer Bags will do what any plastic storage bag does - keep food fresh in the fridge and freezer, but instead of leaching chemicals and living forever, these old bags can be returned to the earth as harmless organic matter at the end of their useful life, with no harmful microplastics or toxic residues.

It's kind of odd that refrigerated food storage bags weren't made of compostable materials way earlier. Compostable packaging already exists and if you buy compostable packaging right now, you are advised to store it in somewhere cool so it doesn't break down.

COMPOSTABLE BAGS ARE VERY HANDY BECAUSE YOU CAN LITERALLY REUSE YOUR BAG TO COLLECT FOOD SCRAPS IF YOU CHOOSE, THEN PUT THE LOT IN YOUR COMPOST BIN OR COUNCIL GREEN BIN.  (JUST DON'T PUT AN ACTUAL PLASTIC TIE ON IT.)

For beeswax wrap fans who are looking for a flexible packaging option for meat storage, these bags are also a viable option for your meat. Scott Morton from Biobag says they bags will do anything a traditional plastic bag will do:

“THE INNOVATION BEHIND BIOBAGS IS CONSTANTLY IMPROVING AND THAT IS WHAT HAS MADE THESE COMPOSTABLE BAGS A TRUE PLASTIC ALTERNATIVE WITH MECHANICAL VALUES THAT MATCH THOSE OF TRADITIONAL POLYETHYLENE PLASTIC BAGS.  COMPOSTING IS THE BEST END-OF-LIFE OPTION FOR A BAG BECAUSE IT CAN HELP TO CREATE NUTRIENT-RICH SOIL FERTILISER.”

Australian governments have agreed on the target of all plastic packaging being reusable, compostable or recyclable by 2025.

The new Food & Freezer Bags are available in two sizes, 4 litres and 6 litres.
