Is there any such thing as Palm Oil Free supermarket chocolate?

If ever there was a reason for a full declaration of a product's ingredient sources, it's supermarket chocolate

I was recently asked if there were any chocolates sold in supermarkets that are palm oil free. You'd think that would be a relatively straightforward question, but it turns out that you need to have a degree in detectivism to work out the answer.

In the end, a team of us and half the palm oil certifiers in Australia have come up with a list of commonly available chocolates that are palm oil free. Some are vegan, some not, but here are the chocolates that you can buy in supermarkets and which are palm oil free.

Haigh's Chocolates

Haigh's is probably the best known and they are the oldest family-owned chocolate maker in Australia, currently run by fourth generation Haighs, Alister, Simon and John Haigh.

As chocolate 'bean to bar' specialists, Haigh are one of a few chocolate manufacturers in the world making chocolate from the raw cocoa bean. Roasting and manufacturing cocoa beans allows them to develop unique blends of premium milk and dark chocolate with distinct freshness, aroma, texture and flavour. Many Haigh products continue to be made or finished by hand, utilising unique artisan skills.

Nib + Noble

Melbourne based Nib + Noble offers a range of 100% natural and organic chocolate products. Using organic coconut sugar, organic cacao powder, and 100% natural flavouring in the form of freeze dried fruit powders and spices.

Organic Times

Organic Times produces organic chocolates (chocolate coated fruit, nuts and licorice, Little Gems, Rocky Road and Easter chocolates), home-style cookies, gluten free cookies, grass-fed butter, milk powder, and pantry ingredients. Organic Times was founded in 1999, is an Australian-owned business and supports organic agriculture as it is essential to our environment and beneficial to the natural eco-system.

Pana

Pana Chocolate is a raw, organic chocolate that is handmade in Melbourne. Pana Chocolate contains only natural ingredients such as raw organic nuts, organic goji berries, organic coconut flakes and pure 100% essential oils.

Chocolaty RAW

Chocolaty Raw is organic dairy free chocolate handmade in Melbourne. Chocolaty Raw vegan chocolates are made only with the finest quality, organic ingredients such as organic raw cacao, organic coconut oil, organic cacao butter, sweetened with organic coconut nectar.

Of course supermarket chocolates aren't the only ones on the market and if you love both chocolates and orangutans, it might be time to reconsider your purchase location options. There are many other beautiful vegan and not vegan chocolates that are palm oil free and way better for you - available online and at stockists.

The good news with chocolate and sustainable packaged food generally is that more and more people are buying it (as opposed to those who say they 'intend' to buy it). A recent report from NYU Stern’s Center for Sustainable Business confirmed that ethical products now account for nearly 17% of the market (up from 14% in 2013).

Thanks for the note Alasdair. Aren't they equity crowd funding at the moment? I think they are also one of the only companies in Australia who make chocolate from scratch, and actually grow the cocoa? Thursday, 10 October 2019
