Sun Butter Oceans Suncare Launches Crowdfund for Summer

Developed by marine biologist team Tom Hiney and Sacha Guggenheimer, Sun Butter Oceans launch first SPF 50 reef safe sunscreen on Kickstarter

Sun Butter Oceans Suncare is a high quality chemical free sun screen and the story of love between a couple of humans and their ocean friends. It's an SPF50 natural sunscreen has been tested and proven over the last 2 years on a bunch of humans working at Ningaloo Reef off the west coast of Australia. The sunscreen was originally developed by Tom and Sacha because they wanted to find a better sun screen alternative that would protect their skin without destroying the reef marine flora and fauna.

What began as a product for themselves, was soon made for the Ningaloo Reef guides, divers and photographers, then for commercial stores and now it's launched on Kickstarter. Tom says:

"WITH EVERY PURCHASE WE MAKE WE HAVE CHOICES. WE CAN CHOOSE HOW WE SPEND OUR MONEY AND WHAT WE GET IN RETURN FOR IT. SOUNDS PRETTY OBVIOUS DOESN’T IT? WHILST WE ALL THINK AT THE START ABOUT THE PRODUCTS AND PERHAPS SOMETIMES THE PACKAGING, DO WE EVER THINK IN THE LONGER TERM?

AT SUNBUTTER OCEANS WE DID. WE REALISED THAT PEOPLE AND OUR PLANET NEEDED REEF SAFE SUNSCREEN BUT WE COULDN’T PACKAGE IN PLASTIC. WE WANTED TO MAKE IT AS EASY AS POSSIBLE TO CHOOSE SOMETHING GOOD FOR THE PLANET AND GOOD FOR US."

Sunbutter is delivered in a tin because its easily recyclable and more importantly its great to repurpose. Being conscious of stickers and plastic, the labels are printed directly onto the tins to avoid using plastic stickers.

People wanted Sun Butter Oceans to refill their tins - but sadly this isn’t possible due to the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Association rules) around Sunscreen - which is classed as a medicine. This is annoying, but the tins are very handy for repurposing all kinds of things. Many deodorants & balms come in tins of the same size and can be used for the same things. Store jewellery, head phones or maybe plant a succulent in them? If you need to take some dry supplies camping, they are perfect.

So next time you’re out shopping or browsing online, have a think not just about the things you need - but how they’ll be delivered to you and what they’ll be contained in. By choosing to support ethical and environmentally conscious businesses - you’re money and choices are making a statement that shows the type of future we’d like to live in.

You can support Sun Butter Oceans campaign by heading to Kickstarter. The reefs and oceans, along with your skin, appreciate the support.
