Simon Says - The Journey Matters. So Cover Up.

We all share the same beginning when we’re born. We will all inevitably share a similar ending. So, it’s what happens in between these two defining moments that is more or less up to us.  Sometimes what happens in between is out of our control, an unexpected misfortune, a beautiful or terrifying moment, or a simple reminder.

A reminder that things can change quickly when we least expect it, and so it is that sometimes it’s how we embrace the unexpected that comes to define us.

I am Simon, the founder of tscudo and I want to share what happened to me - for two reasons. One because a little black spot on my journey is the reason I started tscudo and two, because I want to remind you to get your skin checked too. It might just save you life, as it saved mine.

It all started with a simple reminder from my wife to get my skin checked. There was a spot on my back that looked dark and out of character. It had been 9 years since my last skin check so a long-awaited skin check was made with the local skin specialists.

It was a routine skin check until the GP stopped at ‘that’ spot and a biopsy was made right then and there. The biopsy came back the following week as Stage 1 melanoma.  A real scare. That spot plus the surrounding skin was removed. Fortunately only a simple procedure ending with a new scar. At only 39, with an amazing wife and two beautiful daughters, I was not only given the all clear of any further stages of melanoma but also given the gift of a lot more clarity in life.

IN AUSTRALIA SKIN CANCERS ACCOUNT FOR AROUND 80% OF ALL NEWLY DIAGNOSED CANCERS AND IN AUSTRALIA THE INCIDENCE OF SKIN CANCER IS ONE OF THE HIGHEST IN THE WORLD. THIS GOT ME THINKING ON HOW I COULD ANSWER THIS MOMENT.

Having been involved in Australia’s outdoor industry for years, I was very aware of the growing interest in the function of fabrics and the sun protection they offer. I also noticed more consumer interest around ethically produced and sustainable products.

With the threshold for consumer waste at a complete tipping point and the pressure on industry to eliminate single use plastic, I decided to combine two areas I was passionate about with the lifestyle I enjoy so much. Sun protection, sustainability and the outdoors.

And so tscudo was born. A new sustainable shield designed to protect you from the elements. A chance to assist in the prevention of skin damage and educate others on the importance to simply cover up properly when outside and at the same time highlight the importance of recycling.

THE FABRIC USED FOR TSCUDO'S TOPS HAD TO BE SPECIAL. IN FACT, THE RECYCLED FABRIC IS ONE OF THE MOST CERTIFIED, MOST TRACEABLE FIBRES IN THE WORLD. THE FIBRES ARE MADE FROM 100% RECYCLED PLASTIC.

This plastic material is called PETE. (If you don't know, it’s the plastic with the number 1 and chasing arrows logo.) Of course, the process to turn recycled plastic into fabric also eliminates the need for crude oil and toxic liquids during the production stage of fibre production, which is why recycled PETE is such a great thing for the environment.

The tscudo fabric made from recycled plastic bottles that is sun protective. UPF50+, blocks UVA and UVB rays, plus it stretches, is light weight, breathable and quick dry.

One top can take the place of three. So, this could be the answer to minimising fast fashion and eliminating waste and landfill which is a real positive.

The tops are perfect in the water and on land. Comfortable enough to wear during your morning esplanade walk, or that weekend hike followed by a swim at the beach yet stylish to wear when discovering a new city whilst travelling abroad.

Or if you are Scott Elleman on your way to Mount Everest, that works too!

So, I am living proof that the journey does matter! It really is how we embrace the unexpected and make the most of what we have. This is what defines us. Your actions today - big or small, can make a big difference in the long run and are the start of an incredible chain of events. So, wear sun protection and recycle.

You can buy tscudo online directly from us or stockists like Adventureco at Oatley, who sell all kinds of outdoor gear and also recycle for Nespresso and Terracycle.
